What does CGC1534542 mean?

CGC stands for Certified General Contractor, a license issued by the State of Florida through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). A certified license is statewide, so it is not tied to one city or county. To hold it, a contractor has to meet the state's experience, examination, financial and insurance requirements.

Our license number is CGC1534542. It is the license we pull permits under, and it is the number you should see on your proposal and your permit card.

General vs residential vs building contractor

Florida has three main tiers of contractor licenses. In broad terms, a residential contractor is limited to smaller residential buildings, a building contractor can take on larger projects with some limits on height and structure, and a general contractor has the broadest scope of the three. The exact limits are set by state law and can be detailed, so treat this as a general overview rather than a legal definition.

For a homeowner, the practical point is simple: a general contractor license covers the full range of residential remodeling, from a kitchen to a structural home addition, without having to bring in another licensed contractor to take responsibility for the structural parts.

How do you verify a contractor's license in Florida?

Look up the license on the DBPR licensing portal by name or license number. Check that the status is current and active, that the name matches the company on your contract and that there is no record of discipline you have not been told about. You can search for CGC1534542 and see our record.

Our guide on how to hire a licensed contractor in Tampa walks through the lookup step by step, plus what to ask about insurance and how to read a proposal.

What a general contractor manages for you

Hiring trades one at a time means you become the scheduler, the inspector liaison and the person who figures out whose fault it is when something does not line up. A general contractor takes that job off your plate.

Joseph's pool bathroom addition in St. Petersburg is a good example. The project needed foundation, framing, walls, roof, plumbing, electric, mechanical, paint, tile and cabinets. Dean managed it, coordinated the subcontractors, dealt with the St. Pete inspectors and worked around a separate pool contractor building at the same time.

Permits and inspections across Tampa Bay

Who issues your permit depends on your address. Unincorporated Hillsborough areas like Town 'n' Country, Westchase, Carrollwood and Brandon go through Hillsborough County. Seminole Heights, South Tampa and New Tampa go through the City of Tampa, and historic districts can add a review for exterior work. In Pinellas, Clearwater, Largo and St. Petersburg each run their own building departments, and Palm Harbor goes through Pinellas County.

We submit the permit, answer review comments and schedule each inspection. Rules change, including recent Florida changes to some permit exemptions for small projects, so we confirm requirements with your building department before work begins.

Insurance and why it matters

Green Home Remodeling is licensed and insured. Insurance protects you if someone is hurt on your property or something is damaged during the work, and it is one of the requirements for keeping a Florida contractor license.

Ask any contractor for a current certificate of insurance before you sign. If you live in a condo or an HOA community, the association will often ask for one too, and we provide it.

Written, line-item proposals

Every estimate we give ends in a written proposal broken out by line item, with a projected timeline. You can see what demolition, framing, plumbing, electrical, cabinets, tile, finishes and permits each represent, and compare options side by side instead of guessing what a single lump sum includes.

That breakdown also makes changes easier. If you decide to upgrade a countertop or skip a scope item, everyone can see what moves.

Green Construction built a new pool bathroom for us to compliment the new pool we are having built in St. Petersburg Florida. While a small project, an addition to the rear of the home, it still required all the requisite sub- contractors - foundation, framing, walls, roof, plumbing, electric, mechanical, paint, tile and cabinets. The cost was very competitive and fair. Dean managed the project and was fantastic -he communicated constantly with us, coordinated with his sub- contractors efficiently, dealt with St Pete inspectors professionally, and also coordinated with our pool contractor ensuring the bathroom addition was done on time, and it did not interfere with the separate pool construction project. The addition was done so seamlessly that you would never know there was an addition to the home. Dean is very personable , friendly and accommodating. We met each other for the first time at tye pre- construction meeting - strangers at first we have become friends. That is not typically to become friends with your contractor - and I think it speaks volumes about him and Green Construction I highly recommend Green Construction and specifically working with Dean !

FAQ

General Contractor questions

Have a question we did not answer? Call (813) 536-3976 and talk to a project manager.

Is Green Home Remodeling a licensed general contractor?

Yes. We hold Florida Certified General Contractor license CGC1534542 and are licensed and insured. You can verify the license on the Florida DBPR licensing portal.

What is the difference between a general contractor and a handyman?

A licensed general contractor can pull permits and take legal responsibility for structural, plumbing, electrical and mechanical work through licensed subcontractors. Handyman work in Florida is generally limited to minor jobs that do not need a licensed contractor. For a remodel or addition, you want a licensed contractor on the permit.

Do I need a general contractor for a kitchen or bathroom remodel?

If the remodel involves multiple trades, permits or structural changes, a general contractor is usually the simplest route. One license covers the permit and one project manager coordinates every trade. For purely cosmetic work, the rules may differ, so check with your building department.

How do I verify a contractor's license in Florida?

Search the contractor's name or license number on the DBPR licensing portal. Confirm the license is active, the name matches your contract and there are no unexpected disciplinary records.

Who pulls the permit for my remodel?

We do. As the licensed contractor, we submit the permit to Hillsborough County, the City of Tampa or the appropriate Pinellas building department, then schedule the inspections.

What areas do you serve as a general contractor?

We work across Hillsborough and Pinellas from our Town 'n' Country office, including Westchase, Carrollwood, South Tampa, Lutz, Brandon, Clearwater, Largo, Palm Harbor and St. Petersburg.
