One small bathroom for the whole house

Many bungalows in Seminole Heights were built with a single bathroom off the hallway between the bedrooms. It may have been updated once or twice, but the footprint is usually the same: a tub along the end wall, a pedestal sink or small vanity, and a window that may sit inside the shower area.

Because it is the only bathroom, planning matters. We schedule work to keep downtime as short as practical and talk with you up front about temporary arrangements while the room is out of service.

Clawfoot tub or walk-in shower?

Some owners want to keep or add a clawfoot tub for the period look. Others want a walk-in shower that is easier to use. Both can work in a bungalow bath, but each has trade-offs.

  • Clawfoot tub: fits the era, but needs floor framing checked for the weight and a separate shower plan if you want one
  • Walk-in shower: more practical daily, and a low-threshold entry helps for aging in place
  • Window in the shower: needs careful waterproofing, or a design that moves the shower away from it
  • Hex or subway tile, a simple vanity and period-style fixtures keep the look consistent

Raised floors and crawl space plumbing

Unlike slab homes, bungalows sit on raised wood floors over a crawl space. That makes it easier to reach drain lines without breaking concrete, but it also means floor framing under an old bathroom has often taken years of moisture. We inspect from below when possible and plan to repair or reinforce joists before new tile goes down.

Older galvanized supply lines and cast iron drains are common here. Replacing them while the floor and walls are open is usually the smart move. Our walk-in showers page explains how a shower pan and waterproofing are built over a wood subfloor.

Adding a second bathroom

For many families, the real goal is a second bath. That may mean converting part of a bedroom, borrowing space from a back porch, or building a small rear home addition. Rear additions often keep the street view unchanged, which matters in the historic district.

Joseph, one of our reviewers, had a pool bathroom addition built in St. Petersburg, covering foundation, framing, roof, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, tile and cabinets, with Dean as project manager.

Permits and historic notes

Seminole Heights is in the City of Tampa, so bathroom permits typically come from the city's Construction Services. Interior bath remodels generally do not need historic review, but additions and exterior changes in the historic district usually do. Confirm the rules for your address with the city. Our bathroom permit guide explains how city and county permits differ.

Permits for Seminole Heights projects

Seminole Heights is inside the City of Tampa, so building permits typically go through the city's Construction Services, not Hillsborough County. Exterior work on homes in the local historic district may also need historic preservation review before a building permit. We handle permits and inspections as your licensed contractor; confirm current requirements with the city for your address.

Absolutely incredible transformation! We recently had our bathroom remodeled by Green Home Remodeling, and the results exceeded our expectations! What was once an outdated bathroom is now a beautiful, modern space that looks like something out of a magazine. A huge thank you to Adam, our project manager, for his professionalism, attention to detail, and excellent communication throughout the project. The beautiful marble-look tile, gold finishes, custom shower, and quality craftsmanship made this bathroom truly special. We couldn’t be happier with the final result and highly recommend Green Home Remodeling, especially Adam!

We had a great experience with Dean from Green Home Remodeling. He did our kitchen and master bathroom, and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Dean was easy to work with, always communicated with us, and the price was very reasonable. He did a great job and made the whole process much easier. We would definitely recommend him!

July 2026 · St. Petersburg

Green Construction built a new pool bathroom for us to compliment the new pool we are having built in St. Petersburg Florida. While a small project, an addition to the rear of the home, it still required all the requisite sub- contractors - foundation, framing, walls, roof, plumbing, electric, mechanical, paint, tile and cabinets. The cost was very competitive and fair. Dean managed the project and was fantastic -he communicated constantly with us, coordinated with his sub- contractors efficiently, dealt with St Pete inspectors professionally, and also coordinated with our pool contractor ensuring the bathroom addition was done on time, and it did not interfere with the separate pool construction project. The addition was done so seamlessly that you would never know there was an addition to the home. Dean is very personable , friendly and accommodating. We met each other for the first time at tye pre- construction meeting - strangers at first we have become friends. That is not typically to become friends with your contractor - and I think it speaks volumes about him and Green Construction I highly recommend Green Construction and specifically working with Dean !

FAQ

Bathroom Remodeling in Seminole Heights: FAQ

Have a question we did not answer? Call (813) 536-3976 and talk to a project manager.

How long will I be without a bathroom?

It depends on scope, material lead times and inspection scheduling. We order materials before demolition to shorten the gap and give you a projected timeline in the written proposal.

Can you add a bathroom without changing the front of my bungalow?

Often, yes. Converting interior space or building a rear addition usually leaves the street view alone. If historic review is needed, we help you plan for it.
