Small original baths, big expectations

A lot of South Tampa homes were built when one bathroom was normal. Early 1900s bungalows in Hyde Park and 1950s block ranches around Palma Ceia and Ballast Point often have a five-by-eight hall bath with a tub-shower combo, a pedestal or small vanity, and very little storage.

Families who stay in these homes usually want two things: a better shower and more room to get ready. We often reclaim space from a linen closet or a neighboring bedroom closet, and when a home has only one bath, we talk about adding a second one as part of a larger plan.

What hides behind the old tile?

In older South Tampa homes, demolition is where the real scope shows up. We plan ahead for galvanized supply lines, cast iron drains that have scaled inside, and subfloors softened by decades of small leaks. In block homes on slabs, moving a drain means cutting concrete, which is normal work but needs to be planned and priced up front.

Being close to the bay also means humidity is constant. We put real effort into ventilation, a properly ducted exhaust fan sized for the room, and a continuous waterproofing membrane behind shower walls and under the pan.

Tub, walk-in shower or both?

If the home has a second tub elsewhere, many South Tampa owners convert the main tub to a walk-in shower with a bench, niche and handheld spray. A tub-to-shower conversion also helps if you plan to age in place in a house you love.

In a primary suite with room to spare, a freestanding tub next to a separate shower is another common layout. We sketch both options during the estimate so you can see what fits.

Finish choices are where the room gets its personality. One reviewer, Yexenia, described a bathroom with marble-look tile, gold finishes and a custom shower that our project manager Adam guided from start to finish. Those same choices work well in a Davis Islands primary bath or a Palma Ceia hall bath, as long as the waterproofing and slope underneath are done right.

Permits and flood zones

Bathroom remodels that move plumbing or add circuits generally need a City of Tampa permit, and we handle the application and inspections as your licensed contractor. For homes in FEMA flood zones, bathroom costs count toward the 50% substantial improvement calculation along with everything else in the same project, so we look at your whole plan, not just the bath. Rules change, so we confirm current requirements with the city for each job.

Permits for South Tampa projects

South Tampa is inside the City of Tampa, so most remodel permits go through the City of Tampa building department (Construction Services). Lots in flood zones may also need a floodplain review, and exterior work in historic districts such as Hyde Park may need historic preservation approval first. As your licensed contractor we pull the permits and schedule inspections, but rules change, so confirm current requirements with the city's building department.

Absolutely incredible transformation! We recently had our bathroom remodeled by Green Home Remodeling, and the results exceeded our expectations! What was once an outdated bathroom is now a beautiful, modern space that looks like something out of a magazine. A huge thank you to Adam, our project manager, for his professionalism, attention to detail, and excellent communication throughout the project. The beautiful marble-look tile, gold finishes, custom shower, and quality craftsmanship made this bathroom truly special. We couldn’t be happier with the final result and highly recommend Green Home Remodeling, especially Adam!

We had a great experience with Dean from Green Home Remodeling. He did our kitchen and master bathroom, and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Dean was easy to work with, always communicated with us, and the price was very reasonable. He did a great job and made the whole process much easier. We would definitely recommend him!

July 2026 · St. Petersburg

Green Construction built a new pool bathroom for us to compliment the new pool we are having built in St. Petersburg Florida. While a small project, an addition to the rear of the home, it still required all the requisite sub- contractors - foundation, framing, walls, roof, plumbing, electric, mechanical, paint, tile and cabinets. The cost was very competitive and fair. Dean managed the project and was fantastic -he communicated constantly with us, coordinated with his sub- contractors efficiently, dealt with St Pete inspectors professionally, and also coordinated with our pool contractor ensuring the bathroom addition was done on time, and it did not interfere with the separate pool construction project. The addition was done so seamlessly that you would never know there was an addition to the home. Dean is very personable , friendly and accommodating. We met each other for the first time at tye pre- construction meeting - strangers at first we have become friends. That is not typically to become friends with your contractor - and I think it speaks volumes about him and Green Construction I highly recommend Green Construction and specifically working with Dean !

FAQ

Bathroom Remodeling in South Tampa: FAQ

Have a question we did not answer? Call (813) 536-3976 and talk to a project manager.

How long does a bathroom remodel take in South Tampa?

It depends on what demolition uncovers, permit review and tile or fixture lead times. You get a projected timeline in your written proposal, and your project manager updates you if anything changes.

Can you match the look of an older Hyde Park home?

Yes. Many owners choose classic subway or hex tile, simple trim and period-friendly fixtures while still getting modern waterproofing and plumbing behind the walls. We help you balance character and function.

Do you remodel bathrooms near MacDill Air Force Base?

Yes. Neighborhoods across South Tampa, including those near MacDill, are about 7.5 miles from our Town 'n' Country office and well within our service area. See our bathroom remodeling page for how we work.
