What's usually behind the tile in an older hall bath?

In many original Town 'n' Country homes, the hall bath has a tub-shower combo, a single vanity and wall tile set over whatever backing the builder used at the time. When we open those walls, it is common to find aging supply lines, a worn shower valve and backing that has taken on moisture over the decades.

None of that is visible from the room, which is why our proposals include demolition down to the studs where needed and new waterproofing behind every wet wall. Fixing what is hidden is what keeps a new bathroom from failing in a few years.

  • Old shower valves that cannot be matched with new trim
  • Galvanized or early copper supply lines in some homes
  • Soft or stained backer board behind tub walls
  • Undersized exhaust fans, or none at all

Keep the tub or switch to a walk-in shower?

If the hall bath is the only tub in the house and you have young kids, keeping a tub usually makes sense. For most other owners, especially those planning to stay put for years, a tub-to-shower conversion is one of the most popular changes in homes like these. A low-threshold walk-in shower with a niche, a bench and a grab bar is easier to use every day.

Our walk-in showers page covers the options, from glass panels to curbless entries, and the tub-to-shower guide explains what changes in the floor and drain.

Villas and condos off Hillsborough Ave

Not every Town 'n' Country bathroom is in a detached ranch. The villas and condos along the main corridors bring shared walls, shared plumbing stacks and association rules about work hours, noise and contractor insurance. We provide the certificates an association usually asks for and plan the work so neighbors are not left without water.

Smaller footprints call for smarter choices: a floating vanity to open floor space, large-format tile to cut grout lines, and a frameless glass panel instead of a shower curtain.

Permits, inspections and working close to home

Because Town 'n' Country is unincorporated, bathroom permits generally go through Hillsborough County. Moving a drain, replacing a valve or rewiring a vanity wall typically needs a permit and inspection. We file it and meet the inspector; please confirm the latest county rules for your address as well.

Our office is about 1.2 miles away, so your project manager is close when tile layout or fixture questions come up. Yexenia, one of our reviewers, had her bathroom finished with marble-look tile, gold finishes and a custom shower, with Adam as her project manager. Permits for Town 'n' Country projects

Town 'n' Country is unincorporated, so most remodeling permits go through Hillsborough County Development Services rather than the City of Tampa. Plumbing, electrical, structural and many cabinet or fixture changes typically require a permit and inspections. As the licensed contractor, we apply for the permit and meet the inspectors, but rules change, so confirm current requirements with the county building department for your address.

We had a great experience with Dean from Green Home Remodeling. He did our kitchen and master bathroom, and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Dean was easy to work with, always communicated with us, and the price was very reasonable. He did a great job and made the whole process much easier. We would definitely recommend him!

Green Construction built a new pool bathroom for us to compliment the new pool we are having built in St. Petersburg Florida. While a small project, an addition to the rear of the home, it still required all the requisite sub- contractors - foundation, framing, walls, roof, plumbing, electric, mechanical, paint, tile and cabinets. The cost was very competitive and fair. Dean managed the project and was fantastic -he communicated constantly with us, coordinated with his sub- contractors efficiently, dealt with St Pete inspectors professionally, and also coordinated with our pool contractor ensuring the bathroom addition was done on time, and it did not interfere with the separate pool construction project. The addition was done so seamlessly that you would never know there was an addition to the home. Dean is very personable , friendly and accommodating. We met each other for the first time at tye pre- construction meeting - strangers at first we have become friends. That is not typically to become friends with your contractor - and I think it speaks volumes about him and Green Construction I highly recommend Green Construction and specifically working with Dean !
