Why St. Pete bathrooms need more than new tile

A lot of St. Pete homes still have their original bathroom layout, even if the finishes were changed along the way. In older bungalows that can mean cast iron drains, galvanized supply lines and floors that have moved a little over the decades. In 1950s and 1960s ranches it often means a tub and shower combo, a single small window and a vanity built for a different era.

Replacing the visible parts without looking behind them is how leaks come back. When we open the walls we look at the drain, supply lines, venting and subfloor, and we write those items into the proposal so you see what you are paying for.

What St. Petersburg homeowners usually ask for

Many St. Pete owners plan to stay in their homes for years, so we often design with aging in place in mind from the start. In a small bungalow bath, a sliding or pivot glass door and a wall-hung vanity can make the room feel larger without moving walls.

  • A curbless or low-threshold walk-in shower in place of the old tub
  • Larger format tile with fewer grout lines, and a built-in niche
  • A wider vanity with more storage, where the room allows
  • Better ventilation, which matters in a humid coastal city
  • Grab bar blocking in the walls, even if bars go in later

Pool baths and bath additions

Sometimes the bathroom you need does not exist yet. Joseph, a homeowner in St. Petersburg, hired us to build a pool bathroom as an addition at the back of his house while a separate company built his pool. Dean managed the foundation, framing, roof, plumbing, electrical, mechanical work, tile and cabinets, handled the St. Pete inspections, and coordinated with the pool contractor. If you are weighing a new bath, see our home additions page.

Permits and condo rules

Bathroom work that changes plumbing or electrical is permitted through the City of St. Petersburg. Condo bathrooms also need association approval and often have limits on noise and work hours. If your building sits in a flood zone, ask us how the project fits into the 50% rule before you finalize the scope. Rules change, so we confirm with the city for your specific address.

Our office in Town 'n' Country is about 16 miles away, and one project manager stays with your bath from estimate to final inspection. Read our bathroom remodel cost guide to see what moves the budget.

Permits for St. Petersburg projects

Homes inside city limits are permitted through the City of St. Petersburg building department, and some unincorporated pockets nearby fall under Pinellas County instead. As the licensed contractor, we pull the permits, schedule inspections and close them out. Historic districts and flood zones can add review steps, so we confirm requirements with the building department for your address before work starts.

Green Construction built a new pool bathroom for us to compliment the new pool we are having built in St. Petersburg Florida. While a small project, an addition to the rear of the home, it still required all the requisite sub- contractors - foundation, framing, walls, roof, plumbing, electric, mechanical, paint, tile and cabinets. The cost was very competitive and fair. Dean managed the project and was fantastic -he communicated constantly with us, coordinated with his sub- contractors efficiently, dealt with St Pete inspectors professionally, and also coordinated with our pool contractor ensuring the bathroom addition was done on time, and it did not interfere with the separate pool construction project. The addition was done so seamlessly that you would never know there was an addition to the home. Dean is very personable , friendly and accommodating. We met each other for the first time at tye pre- construction meeting - strangers at first we have become friends. That is not typically to become friends with your contractor - and I think it speaks volumes about him and Green Construction I highly recommend Green Construction and specifically working with Dean !

Absolutely incredible transformation! We recently had our bathroom remodeled by Green Home Remodeling, and the results exceeded our expectations! What was once an outdated bathroom is now a beautiful, modern space that looks like something out of a magazine. A huge thank you to Adam, our project manager, for his professionalism, attention to detail, and excellent communication throughout the project. The beautiful marble-look tile, gold finishes, custom shower, and quality craftsmanship made this bathroom truly special. We couldn’t be happier with the final result and highly recommend Green Home Remodeling, especially Adam!

We had a great experience with Dean from Green Home Remodeling. He did our kitchen and master bathroom, and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Dean was easy to work with, always communicated with us, and the price was very reasonable. He did a great job and made the whole process much easier. We would definitely recommend him!

FAQ

Bathroom Remodeling in St. Petersburg: FAQ

Have a question we did not answer? Call (813) 536-3976 and talk to a project manager.

Can you replace a tub with a walk-in shower in my St. Pete home?

Yes, it is one of the most common bathroom projects we do. We reroute the drain as needed, waterproof the full shower area and add blocking for grab bars.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in St. Petersburg?

If the work touches plumbing, electrical or walls, a permit is usually required by the City of St. Petersburg. We pull it and schedule the inspections as your licensed contractor.

Can you add a pool bathroom to my house?

Yes. We built a pool bathroom addition for Joseph in St. Petersburg and coordinated with his separate pool contractor so the two projects did not collide.
